Swiss Water Decaffeination Process

History of the SWISS WATER® Decaffeination Process

In the early 1930s, a chemical free decaffeination method was discovered in Switzerland. The secret ingredient? Water!

The water process was revitalized almost 40 years later when technology finally caught up to the ideas first developed in the late 30s.

In 1989 a new facility, the only SWISS WATER® decaffeination process facility in the world, was built near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, a region prized for its pure water.

Previously owned by Kraft General Foods, the Swiss Water Decaffeinated Coffee Company is a certified organic decaffeinator and is a public company that is traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) under the symbol SWS.UN.

Today, the 100% chemical free, patented SWISS WATER® Process is used by premium roasters and demanded by discerning decaf drinkers around the world.  We decaffeinate coffee to a 97% caffeine removal standard, in compliance with US FDA guidelines, which is equivalent to the Canadian/International standard of 99.9% caffeine free.
