DIY blogger John Graham-Cumming has shown how to strengthen a wi-fi signal using a coffee can and coat hanger, repurposing the household objects to create a new functional item that increases connectivity. He used an empty 250g Illy Espresso ground coffee can, a Type N bulkhead socket and a Type N plug, a piece of wi-fi antenna extension cable with a reverse SMA connector on the end, and a short piece of coat hanger for the active element of the antenna.
This DIY antenna, which cost around $5 to make, was found to be both directional and more sensitive. When Graham-Cumming used it, he found 97 networks instead of 58 when using a regular wi-fi antenna. He says the received power was between 3 and 9 dB better for distant networks and had much greater range. He was also able to pick up free wi-fi from a hotel 1/4 mile from his house.
