You simply place the pod or capsule inside the machine, start the brewing and throw away the capsule when it's done.
Single-serve, also called pod or capsule machines, are also gaining popularity.
They use coffee which has been pre-ground and packaged for one use. This eliminates pretty much all the guesswork from brewing a cup in that the only control you will have is the water volume. You simply place the pod or capsule inside the machine, start the brewing and throw away the capsule when it's done. No mess, no fuss.
Like super-automatics, they are basically one-touch brewing but, because there's no built-in grinder, the machines typically cost less.
However, the capsules are more expensive than regular coffee beans or pre-ground and you often have limited varieties to choose from.
Some machines have steam options for cappuccinos or lattes and some make only coffee.
Some brands only allow you to use their own capsules, which is fine if you like their varieties, and some allow you to use other brands or even your own pre-ground coffee.
