Synopsis: When the grinder is spinning empty eventhough beans are in the hopper, it's time for cleaning.
When the grinder is spinning empty, eventhough beans are in the hopper, most likely something is blocking the path. Very often a left over piece from the bean bag might be caught inside, preventing the flow of beans. It could also be that the burrs are clogged up and it's time for cleaning.

Coffee and espresso beans are oily. When the grinder turns hot, tar will clog up the burrs over time.

Another frequent problem is moisture. If moisture gets to the beans, the burrs will clog up immidiately. Don't store beans in the freezer or refrigerator, they will condensate when taken out.
Don't panic. There is a great product from Urnex called Grindz. The tablets do a great job cleaning the grinder burrs:
