The Rancilio Rocky SD (doserless model), available in black (for a little upcharge) or silver (with a black faceplate), is an affordable entry-level home espresso grinder. The burrs are steel and they are relatively small in the landscape of such things—only 50mm—but they are speedy (spinning at 1350 RPM), especially for their size, a testament to the hardy motor inside; and consistent, repeatedly grinding out double-shot doses at a rate of at least one gram per second (although, in our tests, that number was about 1.5g/s). The Rocky is predominantly an espresso grinder, but, thanks to the stepped adjustment collar that offers a huge range (40 in all) of grinding options (from fine powdery espresso all the way up to cold brew), it can also serve as a brew grinder in a pinch.
Like the other Rocky, the one of film franchise fame, this one has been around a while and is still relevant. With little trouble, then, Rocky users can search the internet to find helpful advice, reviews, videos, etc., and even contribute to the growing body of knowledge on this beloved little grinder. In addition, Rancilio has had all those years to refine the original model, which it has used to add contemporary touches, such as the translucent blue hopper and chute and rounded grinds tray, without losing sight of what makes it so popular: the burrs, motor, and modern metal body that haven't needed to be updated because they work. The Rocky remains one of the most affordable espresso grinders on the market and perfectly complements the similarly affordable Rancilio Silvia for an enviable entry-level home espresso setup, one that punches above its weight.
By turning the manual ring on the front of the Rocky coffee grinder you have up to 50 grind settings at your disposal.
The Rocky's popularity is not simply a result of its affordability. It is a result, instead, of its simplicity. There are no bells and whistles, no electronics to distract from the serious business of preparing espresso. The Rocky has just two switches for operation: one for powering it on and one for powering the burrs to grind coffee. The latter, which must be held down to grind, is conveniently located on the face of the grinder beneath the portafilter holder. The stepped grind adjustment scheme, conveniently placed on the collar, is easily adjusted by holding a release button and turning the collar clockwise (to go finer) or counterclockwise (to go coarser) to any one of the forty settings. Cleaning the Rocky is easy, too, because it was made to be maintained, including disassembly down to the burrs, with the help of only two screwdrivers (a flathead and a Phillips head) and a grinder brush.
The perfect package of looks, durability and precision. All in a compact footprint.
Rocky coffee grinder is designed to collect ground coffee in the container and dispense it into the portafilter when pulling the manual dosage lever.
Rocky coffee grinder comes especially equipped with an easy to remove and clean collection tray.
