Seattle, WA - January 24, 2013 - The first ever America’s Best Espresso Competition was held at the 2012 CoffeeFest in Seattle on Sept 22 and 23 . Thirty-two roasters from the Western region of the US and Canada competed for the title of America’s Best Espresso. Roasters were judged in three categories of taste including, flavor complexity, mouth feel & appeal and aftertaste. Roasters had a choice between four different espresso machines to brew their best shots (Slayer, Wega Green Line, Nuova Simonelli Aurelia or Rancilio Xcelsius). Two of the top three winners brewed their winning cups on the Rancilio Classe 9 Xcelsius. Blue Star Coffee Roasters of Twsip, Washington took home 1st prize using the Xcelsius. They advanced through four rounds of head to head competition to take home first place. BC’s Bowen Island Roasting Company espresso blend brewed up beautifully with the Xcelsius and the judges agreed, awarding them 3rd place.
